Cheese Savoury Pinwheels

I’m not sure why cheese savoury is called cheese savoury, I’ve never seen a sweet cheese based sandwich filling, but that’s what it’s called. It just means a mixture of cheese, mayonnaise and salad veg. It’s yummy in sandwiches and on jacket potatoes, but I’m going to show you how to use it to create pinwheel sandwiches. They’re quick, easy, tasty and look really good as a platter for a party or picnic. This is a great go-to recipe to knock up quickly for unexpected visitors too, as it requires only small quantities of each ingredient, and you can use what ever you have in your salad draw. Feel free to experiment with the ingredients – try sweetcorn instead of cucumber, a pinch of paprika instead of the basil, chives instead of onion or coleslaw instead of mayonnaise for added texture.

The trick for a good cheese savoury is to chop up the ingredients really small, you shouldn’t end up with a mouthful of cucumber or pepper, you should just get lovely, crunchy bursts of different flavours as you eat it.

Ready in 5 mins – makes 8 pinwheels.

Ingredients:

  • 50g of bell pepper, finely diced
  • 50g of cucumber, finely diced
  • 25g of red onion, finely diced
  • 100g of cheese, grated
  • 5 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • A pinch of basil
  • 2 wraps

Method:

  • Put the bell pepper, cucumber, onion, cheese, mayonnaise, black pepper and basil in a bowl and mix well. – Pic 1
  • Spread half of the filling over one of the wraps, don’t go right up to the edge, leave about an inch of wrap bare all the way around. – Pic 2
  • Fold two opposite sides in on themselves about an inch, so the wrap now looks like a rectangle with two rounded edges. – Pic 3
  • Start rolling up the wrap now from one of the round edges, all the way to the other side. – Pics 4, 5 & 6
  • Cut the wraps into four and serve standing up if you can to show off the whorl. – Pic 7
  • Repeat with the other wrap and the rest of the filling.
